Unlike frogs, toads have shorter hind legs and they will usually crawl. You'll be able to find toads up to two kilometres from ponds, around woodland areas and in long grass. While both are more active at night, toads can cope better with drier conditions, whereas you'll find frogs close to damp areas only.

Encourage pond wildlife 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Our pond had over 40 frogs in it one year and they made at least 15 balls of spawn which soon merged together as a swollen mass of jelly to protect the eggs. The juvenile frogs not yet capable of mating 3 years old may appear in the pond too.
