Dozens of characters have come and gone over the years. Fans are more attached to some than others. Interestingly, one of the best characters on the show was only in one season. It was kind of obvious that he may not last, considering Izzie met him because he was her patient.
Denny was actually a patient at Grey Sloan Memorial when he met Izzie. He was actually on the list for a heart transplant because of a deadly heart condition. Ghost Denny is still around and as adorable as ever.
This episode is full of cuteness, cuddles, and jealousy as Denny follows Izzie around the hospital and sneaks away with her every chance that he gets, and getting to know her all over again along the way.
Alex admits his love for Izzie , but Izzie is more distracted by her ghost boyfriend than her real boyfriend, and can we really blame her? He feels so real to Izzie that she can smell and see him. Does this mean that he's not dead, or is she just crazy? They share one last kiss before he disappears forever, finally passing over to the other side. It's a long road to recovery for Izzie , but at least she believes in her heart that they both got the closure that she needed and that she is okay.
Passionate about writing and the entertainment industry, Alex currently works as a freelance writer for ScreenRant, GameRant, and TheThings. She is also a screenwriter, and holds degrees in Film Production and Fine Arts.
Twitter: itsjustalex He jumps straight over that line and then kicks the front door of the building down for good measure. The first time that he meets Izzie, he jokes about his star sign and his hobbies like something out of a cheesy dating profile, and the playful flirtation only gets bolder from there. He isn't shy about his intentions, and Izzie is just as infatuated with him. For someone so close to dying , Denny is buzzing with life, love, and good humor, but there is never any doubt that he is also a very sick man.
His day-to-day revolves around his condition, and even if he tries not to show it, it takes a heavy emotional toll on him. That makes his tearful smile as he tells Izzie that he might finally be getting a new heart even more meaningful. It's not just a surgery, it means that he might get his entire life back. Tachycardic but awake, the doctors take quick action and shock Denny's heart in an attempt to slow his rapid heartbeat enough to save his life.
Jealous of their connection, Alex offers to man the paddles and takes a smug pleasure as Denny cries out in pain. Stabilized but weak, Denny still manages to get the last word in, joking through his pain, and letting everyone in the room know that he is in fact trying to impress Izzie. For a man always making lewd jokes and professing his feelings for his doctor, there is something incredibly pure and vulnerable about Denny Duquette.
He always knows exactly the right thing to say, and that's the case when Izzie finally tells him that yes, she will marry him. Time doesn't matter to him anymore. Then, in the season 2 finale, as Izzie was on her way to show Denny her prom dress, he threw a clot and he died. Again, we knew it was coming! We really did! And somehow I think that made it hurt worse?! As if losing Denny isn't bad enough, you then pair the emotion of that loss with the show's most notable music moment — Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" plays as Izzie lies next to his dead body — and you've got a scene that's sure to destroy viewers.
I understand that Denny didn't really have a place on that show, especially not once he got all healthy and healed. But I'm not sure I'll ever stop thinking about those dimples. I know what you're thinking: Haven't people died on Grey's Anatomy? Yes, yes they have. And there are a couple other deaths that haunt me as well.
